Few, If Any, Units Are Oceanfront Date: August 24, 2010
Best things about resortInteresting and varied floorplans, indoor & outdoor pools, lots of amenities, lifeguard rents umbrellas & chairs in front of resort.
Best attractions or restaurants nearbyThe Lost Colony outdoor theatre on Roanoke Island - about an hour's drive, the Wright Brothers' memorial and museum in Kitty Hawk - about 20 mins drive, Jockey's Ridge - can take hang gliding lessons (soft dunes on which to land/crash), lots of light houses to visit, can rent 4-wheelers on guided ride through the dunes, can rent kyacks on guided tour where you can hear the red wolves howl, can see the wild ponies.

ReviewI probably would not stay there again since I prefer oceanfront units. Maybe some top floor units on the ocean side of bldgs. 806, 801, & 201 (as you are looking at the resort map) have nice view of the ocean - it's hard to tell. The other side of these units are pool side.
Superficially, many of the buildings were in disrepair. Resort sponsored activities were posted on an outside bulletin board near the beach, which I didn't see until near the end of my stay.
Unit 509-A is on the top floor, which I liked, and is the furtherest set of bldgs. from the ocean, which I didn't like. The deck faces toward the ocean, and you can just catch a glimpse of the ocean on the horizon from the deck. Kitchen cabinet doors were missing, kitchenware items were missing and inadequate for cooking and eating in the unit. Mugs & bowls are tiny. Only one small 1.5 quart casarole dish. Lots of cabinet space for storing pantry items. Plenty of toilet paper, hand soap, automatic and regular dishwashing detergent, which is unusual for most RCI resorts. Nice welcome basket with popcorn, coffee, sugar, creamer, etc. This unit has loft 2nd bedroom with no closet for hanging clothes, 2nd bathroom was downstairs off the living area, no TV in 2nd bedroom. Only 3 outdoor chairs on deck - needed the fourth one - was told that maintenance didn't have another one.
Telephone number of unit was not printed on telephone. When lugging an umbrella, chairs, and a beach bag, it's quite a long walk to the ocean. I never saw a tram, which the literature states runs about every 30 mins. - there may no longer be one. Very spacious master bedroom with nice one person sized whirlpool tub in addition to shower/tub. Sink area is open to bedroom area, which I didn't like - no privacy, & the light may bother the person in bed. Lots of counter space at the sink. Only one medium sized towel rack that was falling off the wall & one hand towel ring was not sufficient for hanging towels - used knobs meant for window curtains to hang wet items. No window curtains - lots of light comes in through plastic blinds.

Better than expected resort in a great location Date: July 2, 2010
Best things about resortLocation, location, location!
Best attractions or restaurants nearbyCorolla beach to see the ponies, Currituck Lighthouse, Jockey's Ridge where we flew kites, Wright Brothers Memorial, Sunset Grill and Raw Bar (across the street), Awful Arthur's for seafood, Stripers Bar and Grille in Manteo

ReviewAfter reading reviews, I expected thin walls, thin towels, terrible bathrooms, along with terrible service. I was there with 7 other people and while the resort is dated, there is work being done on the property. We heard no noise from neighbors, the towels were fine, the kitchens were well stocked, and no mold in the bathrooms. When we called with a maintenance problem, someone showed up within 10 minutes. The staff was pleasant and helpful. We didn't use the pools, but the water was clear. The town of Duck is very cute and has everything you need.

Amazing location, refreshing vacation Date: April 9, 2010
Best things about resortIt's a hidden treasure in the adorable town of Duck. The resort is gated and I felt safe knowing that each vehicle that passed through was a fellow vacationer and not just someone looking to use the pool. The staff was very helpful and always friendly. I also loved the option of an outdoor and indoor pool...our master bedroom had a whirlpool tub in the room, not the bathroom...you could see the ocean from the window in our bedroom too!
Best attractions or restaurants nearbyMy husband and I visited Corolla Beach to check out the Wild Mustangs, stopped for pictures with the Currituck Lighthouse, and enjoyed 10 cent peel n eat shrimp at Hurricane Moe's.

We also visited the Wright Brothers National Memorial in Kill Devil Hills which was only about a 15-20 minute drive.

ReviewThis was our second trip to the Outer Banks area and we loved every minute of it this time around. One of the best things about Duck is that there are NO public beach accesses, you MUST be staying there to enjoy the beach so it's not very crowed and there were lots of shells to find! I loved driving through the Town, I felt like we were driving through Mayberry by the beach...where have I heard that before???

I must say, the past reviews for BIS Duck really scared me. I thought I would need to wear shower shoes in our unit, pack our own towels and bring our own blankets. Boy were those reviews misleading. Our 3 bedroom (3rd floor, 2 unit lock out) Villa over looking the ocean was WELL equipped with everything we needed from toilet paper, trash bags, and dish soap to clean sheets on the bed and towels in the bathrooms. (I still recommend brining toilet paper and such, maybe not every unit is the same). I even asked the VERY kind desk woman what the deal was and she informed my husband and I that a new company had just bought BIS Duck and they were making tons of upgrades. The pool and rec center were getting extreme makeovers during our stay as well as the outdoor swimming pool area. The units looked like they had received some TLC recently as well. I have a feeling when we come back next year the place will be a 5 star resort again and we can't wait!
We own Unit #1008 here and that is where we stayed from March 7th-14th 2010.

Best things about resortGreat location, close to sites, beach and dining.
Best attractions or restaurants nearbyKitty Hawk is a must see! Breakfast at the First Light in Corolla was wonderful.

ReviewAfter reading the reviews for this resort I was a little apprehensive because we had family driving down from New York to meet us for the week. Yes the resort needs some well deserved TLC and yes the unit was not a suite at the Ritz Carlton (we also own in a gold crown resort) but we had a wonderful time. The resort is under new management and they are working on imporving the buildings and units. Our unit (413) had new carpeting and fresh paint, the furniture was cheap but served it's purpose. There are A LOT of stairs but our unit was on the first floor so that was not an issue for us. The unit has a large balcony with a view of the ocean and the pool as well as a fireplace and we used both religiously. We had two young girls with us (13 and 10 years old) and they had a wonderful time. When we were at the resort we took long walks on the beach, collected shells and spent almost every afternoon at the indoor pool.

If you are expecting the Ritz then you will be disappointed but if you are looking for a nice place to have a family vacation then this resort will serve your purposes. The staff was friendly and helpful although they do not provide cleaning services or towel exchange. There was a vacuum cleaner and a full size washer/dryer in the unit and we did our own laundry and vacuumed when we needed to.

I would recommend this resort if you are looking for a family friendly place for a nice low key vacation.
